Inverkip

Zaterdagochtend. In een hotel aan de schotse kust gaat onze wekker om 5:30 af. Slaperig en nog een beetje brak staan we op en kleden we ons aan om vervolgens op pad te gaan.

Ons doel is de electriciteits centrale van het South of Scotland Electricity Board in Inverkip.

We hebben afgesproken met twee fotografen uit Schotland.

Op de afgesproken plek aangekomen zien we ze al snel staan en nadat we de handen geschud vertrekken we richting de 'ingang'.

In het donker lopen we ongeveer 10 minuten door een dicht struikgewas. Al struikelend en kruipend komen we uiteindelijk bij het hek. Het is even zoeken naar een goede doorgang aangezien de bewakening regelmatig het hoge hek controleert op vernielingen.

Nadat we een gat hebben gevonden waar we door heen passen wurmen we ons er doorheen en staan we op het terrein van de centrale.

Voorzichtig lopen we verder naar het inmense gebouw. Het laatste stuk trekken we een sprintje, want het is de truc om ongezien langs de camera's te komen.

Buiten adem en vol met adrenaline staan we een later langs het pand. Onze gids, die er bijna kind aan huis is, loodst ons langs ladders en kooiladders naar een veilige ingang.

Voorzichtig, want de bewaking zit hier vlakbij.

Eindelijk... we staan binnen!

Omdat het nog donker is lopen we maar achter onze gids aan.

In het licht van zijn zaklamp krijgen we een beetje een idee waarin we terecht zijn gekomen.

Na een minuut of 5 gelopen te hebben door een doolhof van gangen en trappen staan we in het hart van de centrale, de control-room.

Geweldig! Terug naar de jaren '70!

Omdat we alleen in het donker ongezien binnen en buiten kunnen komen zullen we de hele dag hier door moeten brengen. Daar zagen we wel wat tegen op, maar de uren vlogen voorbij! 13 uur hebben we hier rondgelopen, en nog hebben we niet alles gezien.

Om half 6 spraken we weer af in de control-room om daarna in het donker het pand weer te verlaten.

Dus trappen af, kooiladders naar beneden, door de opening naar buiten, nog meer trappen en kooiladders, het sprintje terug naar het hek, door het gat en we staan weer buiten!

Moe maar voldaan nemen we afscheid van onze schotse collega's. Zonder hun hulp was het nooit gelukt!

De SSEB electriciteits-centrale is een olie gestookte centrale, gebouwd in de jaren '70.

De 236 meter hoge schoorsteen is het hoogste vrijstaande gebouw van Schotland.

De centrale was gereeds in 1973, maar door de olie crisis die toen heerste was het opstarten van de centrale niet efficient.

Er werd besloten om de centrale standby te houden voor noodgevallen.

Tijdens de mijnwerkers staking van 1984/85 lag de aanvoer van kolen stil, en werd de centrale opgestart om Schotland van electra te voorzien.

In 1988 werd het weer stil gelegd en tot op heden 'in de mottenballen' gelegd om achter de hand te houden voor noodgevallen.

Plannen zijn om in 2009 met de sloop te beginnen waardoor het terrein vrij komt voor de bouw van huizen en bedrijven.

Saturday morning. In a hotel to the Scottish coast our alarm clock wakes us at 5:30 AM. Sleepily and a bit broken we get dressed. After that we start on our trip. Our goal is the powerplant of the South of Scotland Electricity Board in Inverkip. We had made an appointment with 2 scottisch photgraphers, who will help us to get in.

Arrived on the agreed spot we met them and after shaking hands we walk to the 'entrance'.

In the dark we walk about 10 minutes through bushes.

Stumbling and creeping we finally arrived at the fence.

Because security regular checks the fences on damages we had to search a while for a good hole where we can climb through.

Carefully we walk further towards the huge building. The last mile we have to rum to avoid being seen on one of the security camera's.

Exhausted and full with adrenalin we arrive at the corner of the building.

We follow our guide, who is almost living in the plant. Afer several stairs we arrive at the entrance.

Carefully, because the security is nearby.

Because itis still dark we follow our guide through the building.

In the light of his flashlight we can see a bit of the huge building we have just entered.

After 5 minutes walking through a labyrinth of stairs and hallways we arrives in the heart of the powerplant: the control room.

Great! Welcome in the 1970's!

Because we only can get out unseen in the dark we have to wait until the evening. At first we thought it would be a very long day, but the day was gone before we knew it.

13 hours we walkes around and still we didn't see everything.

Around 17:30 we met again in the control-room and together we headed to our way out.

So down the stairs, to the entrance, more stairs, running to the fence, through the hole and out we are!

Tired but satisfied we said farewell to our scottish guides, without them we never succeeded it!

The SSEB Powerplant is a oil heathed plant, build in the 1970's. When the construction was completed it was uneconomical due to the oil-crisis in 1973.

Due to that reason the plant never worked as planned and they decided to keep the plant standby for emergencies.

During the mineworker-strike of 1984/85 the plant was started to avoid Scotland of electricity because there was not enought coal.

In 1988 the plant was ceased and until now 'mothballed'  to keep standby.

There are plans to start demolishing in 2009 to make place for houses and small companies.
