De historie van dit gebouw met zijn witte gevel gaat ver terug. Al in 1782 was hier een katoenspinnerij gevestigd, en het vermoeden is dat dit zelfs de eerste machinale fabriek was in de wereld. De firma Paton kocht dit gebouw in 1896 toen hun eigen fabriek door brand was verwoest. Paton produceerde onder andere veters. In hun hoogtijdagen wel 25 miljoen paar per jaar! In 1990 kocht het ierse bedrijf Punch de gebouwen op, en ondanks hun investeringen in het gebouw en in machines verlieten ze in 2003 Johnstone door de productie naar elders te verhuizen. Er zijn plannen om de gebouwen en het terrein een nieuwe bestemming te geven, maar de ideeen lopen nogal uiteen: sloop en het bouwen van appartementen tot ombouwen tot een industrie museum.

The history of this building with its white facade dates back to 1782. In that year it was used by a cotton-spinning factory. It is thought to be the first machine factory in the world. The Paton company bought this buildings in 1896 after a fire destryed their own factory. Paton produced shoe laces. In their best days they produces 25 millions pair in a year! In 1990 the plant was bought by the irish company Punch. Despite investments in the building and in machine they left Johnstone in 2003 by moving the proction elsewhere. There are plans to give it a new destination, but the ideas are rather different: demolish it and build appartments to reconvert and make a industrial museum. |
